The Mediterranean Monk seal is depicted on the reverse of this 2005 sterling silver proof issue, together with the denomination of 1 Cypriot pound. The obverse shows the coat of arms of Cyprus and the year of issue, 2005. The ancient Greeks held this mammal in high esteem, noting that it greatly enjoyed both the sun and the sea. Testament to this is the fact that one of the first Greek coins, minted circa 500 BC, depicted the head of this seal. Each coin comes in a dark blue padded case with a white liner. Each coin is encapsulated and comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Adding further interest to this issue is that the certificate is signed jointly by the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus and the President of the Board of the Mint of Poland which minted this coin.
