AP369 - Great Britain 2009 50p Kew Gardens Cu/Ni BU

This cupro-nickel commemorative collector coin has been issued by the Royal Mint to honor the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England. The Royal Botanic Gardens, usually referred to simply as Kew Gardens, are located in southwest London between Richmond and Kew. It is a world famous landmark, known for its extensive gardens and greenhouses, and was originally started by Lord Capel of Tewkesbury as part of Princess Augusta's Kew Gardens as a way of studying rare and unusual flora.

The reverse of this coin features an image of the Chinese Pagoda, located at the gardens. The Pagoda was built in 1761 by Sir William Chambers. The Pagoda was closed for many years but renovation has been done with a planned reopening in time for the 250th anniversary of the gardens. The years of the anniversary are shown on either side of the coin. The obverse features the standard 50 Pence design by Ian Rank-Broadley, showing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

This wonderful commemorative coin comes presented in an official full-colour folder featuring a detailed history of the gardens.
