AP842 - Niue 2008 $1 Gdansk Amber Route Silver Proof

Produced by the Polish Mint for the Niue Islands, this unique Silver Proof collector coin is the second in a series of coins to be issued commemorating the "Amber Route"; the ancient trade route used for the transfer of Amber across Europe and Asia by the Romans. The series will include 8 coins struck from sterling silver with an antique proof finish, with each coin featuring a different point on the route. What makes this series even more unique is the inclusion on each coin of an insert of genuine amber. This second coin is dedicated to the Polish town of Gdansk (Danzig in German).

In the upper right on the reverse side of this silver coin is the inscription for the town of Gdansk. To the left is the medieval port crane called Zuraw, located at Motlawa River in Gdansk. To the lower right of that is the image of the Neptune with his pitch fork, standing over various sea creatures. Below and to the left is the image of ancient coin, the type used to pay for amber in those times, while above that is a genuine amber insert. Around the rim to the far left is the inscription "SZLAK BURSZTYNOWY" (Amber Route).

The Obverse design is common to all coins in this series and features an image of a horse-drawn cart, by which amber was transported by the Romans from the Baltic Sea to Italy. Behind the cart, on the left, a stylized image of a head of a Roman centurion soldier. In the background is a map with the Baltic Sea outline. At the top of the coin are the words "AMBER ROUTE", while at the bottom "NIUE ISLAND". In the bottom left portion of the coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the Mint of Poland mintmark, the Queen's name, the year of issue (2008) and the denomination (1 Dollar).

The coin comes in a hard plastic capsule with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The first coin in the series, dedicated to Kaliningrad, is still available in limited stock, and ECI also stocks the third coin in this popular series, the Niue Island 2009 $1 Elblag Amber Road Silver Proof
