Euro Collections International - The Home of World Coins
AQ546 - Niue 2009 $1 Elblag Amber Route Silver Proof

The third coin in the 8-issue series struck by the Polish Mint and dedicated to the famed Amber Route trail honors the ancient town of Elblag in Poland's north. The series of coins commemorates the historic trail used by merchants of Rome to transport precious amber from the Baltic regions back to their home in Italy. The route was originally established thousands of years ago but was used by the Romans as early as the first century BC.

The reverse image is a composite design featuring the medieval Roman Catholic cathedral of St. Nicholas, together with a dual portrait Roman coin and a Roman wine cup, set around the 100mm embedded half sphere of genuine natural amber. Around the top of the coin is the inscription "ELBLAG - SZLAK BURSZTYNOWY" (Elblag - Amber Route). The obverse, common to all coins in this series, has the denomination and country of issue, together with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Above is an image of a horse-drawn cart, by which amber was transported by the Romans from the Baltic Sea to Italy. Behind the cart, on the left, a stylized image of a head of a Roman centurion soldier. In the background is a map with the Baltic Sea outline, with the "Amber Route" inscription at the top.

Each of these silver coins is encapsulated and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Also available is the Niue Island 2009 $5 Elblag Amber Route Gold Proof
