AP012 - Niue 2008 $1 Kaliningrad Amber Route Silver Proof

Produced by the Mint of Poland for the Niue Islands, this unique Silver Proof collector coin is the first in a series of coins to be issued commemorating the ""Amber Route""; the ancient trade route used for the transfer of Amber across Europe and Asia by the Romans. The series will include 8 coins struck from sterling silver with an antique proof finish, with each coin featuring a different point on the route. What makes this series even more unique is the inclusion on each coin of an insert of genuine amber. This first coin is dedicated to the Russian town of Kaliningrad.

In the center of the reverse side of this coin is the inscription for the town of Kaliningrad. Beneath the inscription is the image of a Pugio; a small dagger used as sidearms by Roman soldiers. In the background is an image of Konigsberg Castle, the name sake of the town that became known as Kaliningrad in 1946. In the top right portion of the coin is an image of an ancient coin, the type used to pay for amber in those times, while next to that is a genuine amber insert. At the bottom of the coin in a semi-circle, is the inscription ""SZLAK BURSZTYNOWY"" (Amber Route).

The Obverse design is common to all coins in this series and features an image of a horse-drawn cart, by which amber was transported by the Romans from the Baltic Sea to Italy. Behind the cart, on the left, a stylized image of a head of a Roman centurion soldier. In the background is a map with the Baltic Sea outline. At the top of the coin are the words ""AMBER ROUTE"", while at the bottom ""NIUE ISLAND"". In the bottom left portion of the coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the Mint of Poland mintmark, the Queen's name, the year of issue (2008) and the denomination (1 Dollar).

The coin comes in a hard plastic capsule with a Certificate of Authenticity.
