AQ579 - Korea 2009 20000KRW Tug Of War Of Yeongsan Silver Proof

This is the 3rd and final coin in the "Traditional folk game" series of silver coins issued by the Korean mint. It commemorates the Yeongsan Juldarigi, a tug of war game played predominately in the agricultural village ‘Yeongsan’ in South Gyeongsang Province of the Korean Peninsula by village members praying the good harvest of farming. The tug-of-war is played by dividing the village into the East and the West symbolizing man and woman, respectively. The tradition says that the victory of the West(woman) which means a production will bring a rich harvest of the year.
On the obverse is the image of people pulling the rope under the command of a leader. The rope is underpinned with a large tree stump called Bi-nyeo-mok. The reverse shows village people carrying the rope and making music with drums before the beginning of the tug-of-war. On this side is also the nominal face value of 20,000 Korean Won (KRW) and year of issue.
The coin is presented in an official box. Only 5000 of these beautifully designed and sculptured silver proof coins have been issued to overseas distributors and demand will be great.
