AQ673 - Belarus 2009 20R The Nutcracker Fairy Tale Silver UNC

The 10th coin in the remarkably beautiful and widely popular "Fairy Tales" series of oxidised silver uncirculated coins from Belarus is dedicated to the story of the Nutcracker. This only release in the series so far for 2009, this stunning silver coin is enhanced with a single green zircon embedded in the reverse imagery.

Originally known as "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", the story was written by Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann (Better known as his pen name E.T.A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann)) in 1816. It tells the story of the young Marie, who is given a Nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. The doll, who is in fact a cursed young man, comes to life and battles the evil Mouse King, eventually defeating it and taking Marie away to the magical doll kingdom. In 1892, the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created the Nutcracker ballet, along with choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. It became one of Tchaikovsky's most famous compositions, and one of the most popular ballets in the world.

The coin features on the reverse imagery from the story of The Nutcracker, including the doll itself with a mirror of the cursed young man trapped inside. The Nutcracker doll has his sword raised and charges towards the mouse troops, the green zircon crystal gleaming in the Nutcracker's hat. To the right is young Marie with eyes closed, set in front of a stylised Christmas tree. The inscription for "Nutcracker" in at the bottom left. On the obverse is the common design for all coins in the Fairy Tales series; two children sit upon a crescent moon reading from an open book. All about them are stars. At the top of the coin is the inscription "РЭСПУБЛIКА БЕЛАРУСЬ" (REPUBLIC OF BELARUS) with the National Emblem of Belarus, while at the bottom is the denomination of "ДВАЦЦАЦЬ РУБЛЁЎ" (TWENTY ROUBLES) and the year of issue. The coin has gone through an oxidation process to give it an antiqued appearance.

The coin is encapsulated and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
